Just back from MOMA where I saw Preston Sturges' 1940 "The Great McGinty". What a terrific little flick about political corruption in the USA. Great fun and fine performances by Brian Donlevy and the under appreciated Akim Tamiroff. Highly recommended.

Also starring William Demarest, one of my favorite character actors, probably best known as cranky Uncle Charley on "My Three Sons."

He also played the handyman in a creepy 70s TV movie called "Don't Be Afraid of the Dark."

He was also wonderful in that other Sturges classic, The Lady Eve, and in fact spoke the last line of dialogue, "Positively the same dame".

Preston Sturges was brilliant in his short run of social comedies.

Demarest, Pangborn and Blore were part of his troupe, but he attracted the ex-crooner Rudy Vallee for a couple of unflattering comic roles.

Sturges is one of the forgotten geniuses of film. I especially admire SULLIVAN'S TRAVELS and his under-rated UNFAITHFULLY YOURS.

Just seen Demarest in a little known Columbia film "Pardon My Past".A nothing film but a great performance from him.The best performance he ever gave in my view was in "Miracle of Morgans Creek".One of my all time favourites.
