    Hello everybody,

Can you help me, as I fear I may have dreamt this one.

In the late 70s I watched a foreign (European/Russian film) on BBC2 late on night, as was the then convention.

It seemed to be one of those films about the tedium of military life faced with a remote desert enemy who one never saw. It was based around the officers' mess, in a Castle and had a bit of a French in the desert feel to it, but the uniforms were late 19th C Austro-Hungarian facing an adversary in the desert. (I know it makes little geographical sense). (It certainly wasn't Tunes of Glory.)

In later years "la Grande Illusion", "Fort Saganne" or "Colonel Redl" all reminded me a bit of it, but I'm intrigued to know the name, so I can see what it was about.

    Many Thanks.

I think that's an excellent suggestion. My memory is not as bad as it seems.

Noiret, von Sydow, Trintignant, surrealism, Kafka.

No wonder I got confused. Shame Louis de Funes and Lino Ventura wewn't in it too.
