I've been watching some of BBC4's motoring season this week and in the opening to Mickey Smith's Drivetime he spoke of making the 'great British road movie', which got me thinking, are there any?
Genevieve sprung to mind but they hardly travel far, the only other was Soft Top, Hard Shoulder but my memory of that is hazy. Aberdeen with Lena Headey ticks most boxes but I'm not sure it's really a British film.
Any others?

It probably doesn't fit as a classic road trip film, but Leslie Phillips' A WEEKEND WITH LULU with girlfriend Shirley Eaton and her mother from Hell was a hilarious caravan road trip that kept me laughing for days.

The mention of a caravan reminded me of ......

I refer to Heartlands (2003) as a British road movie when recommending it to friends. (If I went into any detail about the plot I fear they'd pass on it.) Warm, wonderful movie; maybe the first time I really took notice of Michael Sheen (or perhaps it wasAll the Bright Young Things). I like the generous spirit with which director Damien O'Donnell handles characters in this, East Is East, Rory O'Shea Was Here.
Clockwise from the late 80s. John Cleese. Farce on the go.
A few years back, I was trading e-mails about "personal" cinema with a web bud in the UK. Mostly micro-budget movies, made by U.S. filmmakers/videographers, sort've essays from a very personal, even revealing POV. He referred to a "road movie" that he thought was a good fit. Wish I could recall the title. Sounded out of the ordinary.
How about Deadly Strangers?
Staggered (1994)
If we consider Clockwise one, why not this ?
Ice Cold in Alex is a War/Desert road movie...
"Last Orders" had a road movie element to it.
Carry on Cabby had lots of cars and roads in it.

True - but no journey.
The Runaway Bus - now there's a road movie!

There were loads of journeys in COC .... they were just short journeys!![]()
This cycling film reminded me of the sinister Pamela Franklin film AND SOON THE DARKNESS (1970) where she and a friend cycled through rural France. Not England, but a road trip to remember.
Cheers,

Two of the greatest of all road movies are British, TWO FOR THE ROAD and HELL DRIVERS.
