There was sad news awaiting me when I returned from the wonderful Jean Kent experience in Norfolk on Sunday. The last of the B western heroes Monte Hale died at his Los Angeles home after a lengthy illness. He was 89. Although never as popular as Roy Rogers and Gene Autry Monte starred in 19 fast moving action westerns for Republic Pictures between 1946 and 1950, first as a singing cowboy (in Trucolour) but later as a straight action hero (in black and white.) After his star dipped he appeared on TV and notably on the big screen as Rock Hudson's lawyer in Giant. On the same set he taught rope tricks to James Dean who used them in the film. The last B western was made in 1954 - Monte's passing closes the final page of the book.

    RIP Mr. Hale.

I read that he once had the majority of his films in his own collection.
