Another nagging memory of a single UK TV play from the late 1970s or early 1980s:

An old man living in poverty is in fact a gifted writer but has found no publisher for his manuscripts, of which he has accumulated several (completed novels) over the years. He won't compromise his artistic vision or change anything in order to get published.

A young man (publisher / agent) discovers him and declares his work to be a masterpiece and sets about making a deal to publish the manuscripts with no alterations or editorial interference. I don't know how it ends but the old man might be betrayed, ripped-off or even murdered...

My memory has the young man being played by someone like Nicholas Ball or Michael Kitchen (though in this latter case I might be thinking of him as a publisher in Caught On The Train) - probably neither, though, as IMDB shows nothing obvious.

Could it be a Tales Of The Unexpected?

This is almost certainly Room For An Inward LIght from the "Leap In The Dark" Series in 1980 (see my own thread trying to identify it a while back). Brian Blessed played the writer and the twist was that he dies before achieving fame & recognition but come back as a ghost . . . the rest is a spoiler.

Yes, many thanks. This is definitely it! Christopher Strauli - got my actors wrong - but I remember him now...
