I wish you luck with this one, Stephen, especially as it led to you winning an award. Congratulations! Depressing to think that this is the latest of 579 (as yet) unsolved films
Hi,
I'm hoping that someone will recall a film that I saw as a kid, with an image that scared and haunted me. THis would be back in the late 50's or very early 60's - black and white, B feature.
A building site. A workman either takes the top off an oil drum, or knocks it over - and a black-oil covered female arm flops over the rim of the drum. Obviously a murdered body in that drum.
I'd a feeling that this might have been an Merton Park Edgar Wallace TV episode - it certainly had that 'feel' - but have never been able to track it down.
Ring any bells with anyone?
My reason for asking is that the image of that oil-covered arm was so potent that it partly inspired a story I wrote entitled THE SONG MY SISTER SANG, which won the British Fantasy Award back in 1999. I'd love to be able to atrribute that image to the film in question.
Over to you!

I'm sure that some of those have been answered but the posters never came back to tell us.
Couldn't find anything with an oil drum but an episode of the Scotland Yard series from the 1950s, called The Lonely House, had something a bit similar.
Some workmen are repairing an isolated road and they find a body in a barrel of tar. Don't know what the gender of the victim was. The over all plot is about a phony marriage bureau which lures unsuspecting clients to the lonely house of the title to be done away with. Apparently, a set of dentures also figures in the plot!
Got the info. from the following sites:

CTVA UK "Scotland Yard" (Merton Park Studios,UK)(1953-61) hosted by Edgar Lustgarten
And the cast list - Ludovic Kennedy!

Stephen - I'd be very happy if it was the correct episode, but I haven't seen it myself, so can't be absolutely sure!
I don't have a copy myself, but the whole Scotland Yard series does still exist and can be bought here:
MediaClassics.co.uk
This company also sells on Ebay.UK. If you don't want the full series, they may be prepared to sell just the disc with The Lonely House on it, so I suppose it is worth asking them.
I've also seen this episode for sale at an American website, which I will try to locate again.
