does sound like part of the plot from Back to the future 3
Watched a film probably from the 1980's which had this guy who needed to time travel back to the wild west. He has to enter a government/large corporation building in the middle of nowhere in the US. I can remember him seeing a tombstone or a news report showing someone with a modern gun back in like 1830. Possibly one of the main characters is a historian with knowledge about a small town in america and he helps the guy travel back in time to find something.

It does, but I remember this as well....it's a time-travel-detective thing, and I can't remember the name...
