    Tales of the Unexpected

I enjoyed the day of programmes on ITV3 from this series over the holiday period.

It is amazing just how many famous film actors of an earlier era (John Mills, Jessie Matthews, Anna Neagle, Joan Collins to drop just a few names) made the trip to ANGLIA tv's tiny Norwich studios to appear in this series.

Check out some of the casts, at:

I like the odds and ends you find on old tapes - ancient adverts, that sort of thing. Can be incredibly frustrating though when an old late night run-out turns out to be interesting and you find that you only have the first ten minutes !

I too, have enjoyed itv3s reruns of tales of the unexpected.

I agree, the quality of actors appearing in it is surprising (Joan Greenwood, Demholm Elliot and even Eli Wallah!)

Three particular favourites have been 'Galloping Foxley' 'The Stinker' and 'The umbrella man'...

I'm wondering whether or not to cough up for a Tales of the Unexpected DVD - but as you'll probably know, there're quite a few series (8, I think). Simple question - which is the best? Does anyone have any strong opinions either way? I'm guessing it gets weaker towards the end, and that it took a couple of series to find its stride - thus may be 3 or 4 are the ones to plump for? I'm not expecting too much from the programme - think of it more as an exercise in nostalgia than "serious" viewing.

Any thoughts? Or if you've any alternative suggestions, I'm more than open to them. Thanks all!

I had the first series for a while, but found wasn't really watching them that often so sold the set to a used dvd shop. Some good eps and some not-so great ones.

If you don't have "Alfred Hitchcock Presents Season 1" I'd get that instead. There's some dud eps in that, too, but generally the quality is much better.

Get Tales .... there one or two rubbish episodes as in any series .... but they are generally good fun and you get to lots of nice views of Norwich and Norfolk.

My favourite episode was called Waxpaper and starred the guy off Private Eye, Raymond something or other. It gives me nightmares to this day.

They actually repeated my favourite T of U (which is infact called Flypaper) the other night. I was so excited, I set my Sky box and woke up to find only half of it had been taped. Obviously with T of U missing the last half kind of spoils it a bit. This is not the first time I've had this problem when using my Sky box, does anyone else find similar happens to them.

As you know Tales of the Unexpected often turns up on ITV3. If I were you I'd go for Brian Clemen's "Thriller". Excellent series. Not all the episodes are first class though but then you always get that. Well worth splashing out the cash. "Flypaper" is one of the best ones if not the best of T of U. I remember watching that in the eighties and was amazed they actually got away with that what with a story involving child murders. Very creepy episode and Alfred Marks superb as usual....

    Hi.

`Flypaper` such a creepy episode, its the one about the school girl who is followed by a stranger. It sends shivers down my spine.

Mind you, the woman at the end seems to be dressed in the same clothes as Hetty Wainthrop, you`d think the BBC would vary thier wardrobe a bit

Sorry can`t show you as it would be a spoiler For anyone whp hasn`t seen it yet but if you have it take a look!

It is also on You tube.

    xx

As I've mentioned in previous posts this is my favourite Tales of the Unexpected episode.

The old ladies outfit is uncannily like Hetty Weinthorpe's do you think BBC props man may have picked it up in a TOTU boot sale. If so imagine the other things that were there are the programmes they'll crop up in.

I also watched on you tube! Unsettling episode indeed like a middle aged predatory couple could exist in the late-seventies, however, there did exist far worse in the 60's..

I was already working 5 years when this great series was first televised and everyone I knew always looked forward to it.

I don't remember the later US episodes being shown over here and IIRC the series, apart from repeats, came to an end in the early eighties.
