Again, I've made a search for the film here, but cannot find a discussion.

One of the few films I can happily watch frequently, again and again. Leslie Banks as Inspector Slade is an absolute gem, and has me in stitches every single time.

My favourite scene in this film is when one of the footballers' is passed the ball and proceeds to dribble past 13 opposition players.

They knew how to play football in those days

I just love the general attitude of Inspector Slade throughout the film, and his hats.

It was announced in the programme on Sunday that the original novel upon which the film is based is about to be republished.Incidentally the author wrote other books with football as their background.

I suppose Hill Wood should get rid of the best and only good thing at The Gooners? Arsene Wenger.

I love the way they asterisk out the "naughty" bit in the title. But then show the title on the DVD box cover - and then also mention it in the description. There's nothing like consistency - and that's nothing like consistency

The breezy eccentric Police Inspector (Leslie Banks) reminds me a little of Ralph Richardson in Q Planes. Both very good films with good performances in the lead.

Watched it today on Film 4 (well, it is very cold outside). Hilarious. They clearly had a great time making it and there are some lovely comedic touches. The performances are almost all over-the-top theatrical, about as natural as a Whitehall farce.

Were footballers ever as upper-class as depicted? For that matter, were the spectators (one woman was wearing a fur coat) ?

Have I mentioned already the occasion at ITN where on a sport story the over-shoulder graphic carrying the word ARSENAL had the newsreader (Mark Austin if I recall accurately) covering up the letters NAL ? I bet they hadn't rehearsed that bulletin.
