I remember seeing this strange drama on Channel 4 circa March/April 1983. It was set in the future where love was forbidden. The settings and costumes consisted of a black and white chequered pattern. I also remember a lot of singing going on. The drama was so popular that it was repeated a week or so afterwards. Can anyone please help with the title?

Sounds like Nigel Kneale's Year of the Sex Olympics. It was originally broadcast in colour in the 60s but was re-broadcast a few years ago using the only surviving version which is black and white.

No I'm afraid not. I already have Year of the Sex Olympics on DVD. Thanks for your support anyway.

Sounds a bit like George Lucas' THX 1138. Love/sex is forbidden and all of the decor is sterile.

Very sorry Bats but it was made a lot later than THX1138 (around about 1982). Thanks for your help. What has also sprung to mind is that the lead star appeared as a guest on one of the Saturday morning children's show at the time. It was a type of rock opera.

This is the model for the newly modernised flats on the Park Hill estate (recently covered on the English Heritage programme) in Sheffield.
