Oh by the way, the evil woman in the film was called mrs. voray.
Anyone else remember this film from late 40s/early fifties? It was about a woman (Freda Jackson?) who took in lots of children and mistreated them, such as locking them in the coal-hole. I must have seen it when it first came out and found it very frightening although I can't remember how it ended. Anyone know if any of the children became well-known?

Thank you for the graphic conclusion of that film. There is another picture which I get confused with. It is, No Room at the Inn. This story (as I recall it) is about some children, who wind up in the care of a drunken - non caring woman. At some point in the film, they are up on the roof of a tin shed. I think that the woman falls, or is pushed off the roof, into the path of a train. I remember one line... Mrs. Asllsop's out! As spoken by one of the children, when the police come to investigate the scene. Thanks for your input...TONY
I remember seeing "No Room at the Inn" just after the WW2 when I was a child. The only actress I can remember in it was Joan Collins who later became a very famour star, and needs no more said about her. There was also another child actress in the film whose first name was Norma, but I can't remember her surname. Sadly she died quite young (I have a feeling she committed suicide, but can't be sure of that) I couldn't remember the name of the actress who took the part of the billet lady who neglected the children in her care, but I can still remember her face. She was a drunk and had men in to help pay for her drinking habit. It made a big impression on me as I had been evacuated in the war, but fortunately had a much better experience. Like Yvonne, I can't remember how it ended, but I do remember some man showing some concern about the children.Originally Posted by Yvonne

The Internet Movie Database (IMDb) is a good source of information about films & TV shows.
For instance, their pages about No Room at the Inn tell you that the character was Norma Bates and that she was played by Joan Dowling who died in March 1954, aged 26.

A lovely actress who should have been a bigger name; she was a good comedienne.
The lanlady was played by Freda Jackson.
I can remember the little girl with the middle class voice, wose daddy came home from,i think the navy,to take her home, and the little boy who she befriended went with them,a real tear jerker, its making me well up thinking about it.
I have been informed by an email enquirer in the USA, that there is a version of "No Room at the Inn" starring Freda Jackson that actually runs for more than 90 minutes. Does anyone know of this version?

Jack
Hi
I've been looking back over old threads and seen some references to the old film No Room at the Inn, I was very young when this was televised but remember it clearly, it was very scary, as, if I remember rightly the woman at the end fell on the railway line.
You do remember rightly! Really a staggering performance from Freda Jackson, extraordinary. A singular film, if some aspects don't hold up so well it's still powerful. Truly grimy for the time.Originally Posted by SteveB
At one point in the film a little boy called Ronny sits on her hat and breaks the feather and she goes mad, a truly scary moment, especially when you're the same age as Ronny when you're watching it! I'd love to see it again just to see if it has the same effect, although I suspect I may be disappointed.
I watched this only the other night and has been said a crackerjack performance from Freda Jackson, however at the end she falls down a flight of stairs in her backyard.
Yes poor put upon Ronny.
A wonderful and underrated film IMHO![]()
She falls down the stairs onto the railway line as a train goes past. Obviously that part is off screen though!
Yes I think you're right Walker, just run the ending through and as she falls down the stairs it cuts to the childrens faces and you hear a train and a look of horror on the kids faces.Originally Posted by Walker
