name='batman']Maybe in the circles you move in .... but around here, polo/turtle/roll necks are for decisive men of action like Bullitt, Kuryakin, Bond and Bodie ....

    Well said Bats.

    Bodie a pretentious twat ....

Very nice. Why do my jumpers never look that shape when I put them on?

name='Lord Lionheart']The polo neck/turtle neck worn by men is right up there with a cravat or corduroy blazer with elbow patches as identifying the wearer as a pretentious twat
    Oh really?

I'm in a bit of a dilemma. I wonder if you could examine this neckline and inform me whether it's a polo, turtle or crew neck!

Bizzare but true - this topic of conversation came up on Radio 2 this morning on the Lisa Tarbuck/Huey Morgan show (standing in for Jonathan Ross).

It all started with Huey mentioning that Gene Hackman looked good in a roll neck in a movie called The Conversation. This started the ball rolling and people srated to text in.

There were honourable mentions for Patrick McGoohan, Dame Judi Dench and Telly Savalas amonst many others.

But my favourite was from a listener called Debbie who actually faxed in a photo of here favourite - Lewis Collins as Bodie

What neckline would that be? I can't say I noticed!

Here's Joan Harrington from UFO wearing a kind of metallic polo neck.

I was a great lover of the skin-hugging polyester polo-neck until I became a fully-formed neanderthal-man and found that my neck stubble made the roll of the neck *bobbly* and somewhat unpleasant after a few wearings and washings. I now prefer the 'round-neck', athough I can tolerate a v-neck if the design is nice. However I dislike the polo-neck, as I find small buttons rather unpleasant.

Woolly jumpers made with roll/turtle-necks are a whole different thing of course. I generally disliked the roll-neck because the wool would irritate my skin, notwithstanding the manly stubble, although I recall the Tetley Bittermen in their fisherman turtlenecks made me feel I wanted to join them, not beat them.

This is on the cover of one of the Saint DVDs I got for a euro each and watched in my beach house on the costa brava only last week ... Yes, even without a polo neck I'm a pretentious twat.

Thing is, does he look cool in this? I rather think not.

Other thing is, it's not my beach house.
