A few weeks back, Brian Matthew played on his Radio 2 Sounds of the Sixties show, Steve Race's 1963 instrumental hit "Pied Piper (The Beeje)". In his commentary, Matthew mentioned that The Beeje was an early 1960s dance craze. As I can't find any info on this particular dance (everyone just seems to remember The Twist, The Mashed Potato, or The Madison), I was wondering if there's anyone out there (who may have been around in the early 60s) that actually remembers this type of dance?

Wish there was a film clip of the dance movements to "The Beeje" out there somewhere but here's the front cover of the sheet music, which shows photographs of the steps. http://www.cjs.co.uk/CJSPICS/61299.jpg

Does anyone know if this dance was one of those demonstrated in the 1963 film Billy Liar?. I am referring to the scenes that were filmed in the Locarno dance hall sequence. Steve Race's recording of "Pied Piper (The Beeje)" was a hit in March 1963, around about the time that (I think) Billy Liar was in production.

Middle 50's to middle 60's was my scene and I remember the tune but did not know there was a dance attached......Unless it was a party dance a la YMCA then this may be it:- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8_JsBU8o-ok
