Saw this film last night via You Tube (a useful source of films) and am curious about what other Britmoviers think about it. I had known of the film for years but never made any real attempt to see it feeling it was just a contractual obligation flick for Cooper when Michael Anderson took of The Wreck of the Mary Deare from Hitchcock and Cooper agreed to do a second film for Anderson. On seeing it I was pleasantly surprised and felt it better than its reputation. Kerr IMHO is superb in it as are the rest of the cast even if Cooper looks frail (he was dying by then) and incongruous in a British thriller. The Hitchcock techniques are laid on with a trowel but it still works on it owns terms.

Anyone else agree or disagree ?

I watched it a while ago and posted this in 'Watched Last Night' ....

The Naked Edge with Gary Cooper and Eric Portman. As dpgmel said it's a bit slow at times but it builds to an exciting climax and features good performances from the leads. EP is very good (as usual).

    I enjoyed it.

It didn't do a lot for me. I liked Cushing's bit and I thought that Portman was pretty good. The chief problem for me was Kerr's character. I realize we are supposed to realize that she's become obsessed with the notion that her husband is guilty, but she came off more deranged than obsessed to me.

      Spoiler:
My one burning question: what exactly was Portman's character supposed to be doing in that bookshop?I thought he was perhaps a pornographer, but the woman didn't bat an eye when Kerr asked to see him. She just told her to pay her on the way out???

I thought this was a very entertaining thriller with some excellent and some good performances and a good deal of atmosphere, although some of the publicity was abysmal - "by the man who wrote Psycho" or something of that kind, which meant Joseph Stefano. Stefano only did the adaptation on The Naked Edge based on a novel by Max Ehrlich, as well as his screenplay of Psycho was adapted from the novel by Robert Bloch. Bloch sued Stefano because Stefano went on to promote himself as the "author of Psycho", and he had to stop it.

And yes, I liked the Cushing guest appearance too - I only wished he had a little bit more to do. Is the movie available on DVD? I haven't seen it in at least 20 years.

Ah. Have to admit that never occurred to me!

      Spoiler:
    (not that there wasn't lesbianporn)

But that this was the explanation.

According to a reader's letter published in a National newspaper a couple of days ago. Both of Gary Cooper's parents were English and he and his Brother were educated at Dunstable Grammar School.
