Yes, it is called "Don't Be Afraid of the Dark." The little demons inside the fireplace are never given a real explanation for. It was a great made for tv movie.

I saw this many years ago on television and came across it on Youtube recently. However, the guy who'd posted it had his channel closed before I got the chance to see it again. He'd put up a lot of these old TV supernatural movies and I managed to catch Crowhaven Farm, which I had seen before, and Don't Go To Sleep with Dennis Weaver and Valerie Harper (of Rhoda fame) - both great actors. Many of these films had downbeat endings, so we don't always get the traditional Hollywood happy conclusion!

I saw it when it was on Youtube too! Considering it was made for tv, it was very atmospheric and had such a chilling ending! My childhood home had a chimney like that and I tried staying away from it after seeing that movie when it first aired on tv in the 1970's.
To quote Peggy Lee's classic song, Is That All There Is? (a DUTCH trailer?):

Never got to see this one myself, but I too was traumatized as a lad by Crowhaven Farm and by various installments of the TV series Circle of Fear. Gotta get a DVD set of that someday...

I recommend seeing it if you like good horror films. There's been talk of a remake (!) but the original is quite scary. The demons in the movie are portrayed by real actors - there's no animation and no CGI, of course. Somehow I don't think a remake can execute the same effects as the original. Kim Darby's a cute actress, though. I should say though, this one's not for toddlers.

I know what you mean - I still tend to look away when pulling the curtains at night due to two scary scenes: the first was in Salem's Lot when that young boy raps on his brother's bedroom window, the second was in The Innocents, which we mentioned on the other thread, when the governess suddenly sees Peter Quint through the glass.
Another moment which has always stayed in my mind is from Let's Scare Jessica To Death, when Mariclare Costello disappears underwater in the lake wearing a swimsuit, then re-surfaces dressed in her Victorian bridal gown!
I also remember The Dark Secret of Harvest Home as being very good and a TV movie called Satan's School for Girls with Pamela Franklin and Kate Jackson. I think it got re-made a few years back.

All those made for TV films from the 70's were great and very scary considering we never had the special effects they have today. I just wish they would make some good shows like that now or even repeat them, i have Crow haven farm and Dont be afraid of the dark and my kids found them pretty scary now too.

I loved Salem's Lot and Let's Scare Jessica to Death. Movies like that worked because they left something to the imagination. A movie like Don't Be Afraid of the Dark does exactly that and still has viewers wondering "Wherever did those demons come from?" long after seeing the movie.
I really liked Salem's Lot when I saw it the first time as a kid, and only found out many years later that it was a TV movie. Just goes to show you don't need huge budgets and CGI effects to create a good scary horror story.
I used to watch Starsky & Hutch so I remembered David Soul from that, and of course James Mason. This film used to be shown on ITV every now and again, but I haven't come across it for a while now.

I agree with you, Torinfan. I think one of the scariest things ever was when somebody or something was banging on the walls and door outside the bedroom in The Haunting - yet you never get to see what it was. You expect some gore here and there with a vampire or werewolf movie, but I think there is a world of difference between that and something like Hostel. I can only go by what I've read, but I certainly have no desire to see it.

I know what you mean about modern horror and slashers. I like a few classic ones, like Friday the 13th (not the Jessie Matthews version, of course) and Halloween, because they had a real story. I liked Haute Tension because it had a bit of a twist in the story. But the rest of them, I wouldn't be interested in.
Re: "Don't Be Afraid of the Dark." A great film! Also starring one of my all-time favorite character actors--William Demarest (Uncle Charley from "My Three Sons," and a great supporting player in those Preston Sturgess films).
Re: Scary 70s TV movies. Those were terrific. This forum's own John Moxey did some of my favorites![]()
