Sounds like a CFF film called Treasure at the Mill, made in 1957, but run at children's matinees for years afterwards.
Hello.
I remember seeing a film at the Odeon around 1962 which involved Roundheads and Cavaliers. The only part I can really recall is that a young boy who is in the present day (1960's), but living in an old country house, is looking for some sort of clue and goes along a small stream, under an old stone bridge and finds a message hidden in the brickwork.
I'm fairly sure it was in black and white.
If anyone can name this one I'd be grateful!

Thanks my friends!!
This does sound like the film. I have ordered a copy on dvd from the Malcolm Saville Society and I am thrilled that an almost 50 year old mystery has been solved.
Painter Paul, or anyone else, whats the Malcolm Saville Society ? Apologies for the ignorance on my part.
Just thought I would add a bit to this as I was responsible for releasing the DVD. The Malcolm Saville Society are a group of enthusiasts who are interested in the work of this children's author. Two of his stories were written with a view to making films of them. These were Trouble at Townsend (1946) and Treasure at the Mill (1957).
In 2008 we released the DVD which has both films on it. We did not want it to be a bit of an amateur job so we had it done professionally. It was properly mastered, classified etc and we pay royalties on it. It was a major outlay for the Society and we are looking to get this money back eventually through sales.
Both the films were made mostly on location so we were able to re-visit the sites and make a documentary at each. For Treasure at the Mill, we visited Ardleigh and Dedham in Essex with one of the children who appeared in it. Trouble at Townsend was made at Malcolm Saville's own home in Wheathampstead Hertfordshire so we took his youngest son back there to talk about it. These and lots of other ROM files are included on the DVD.
You know about Treasure at the Mill but Trouble at Townsend is a nice little film too. It starred a very young Petula Clark and she sings her first screen song.
The DVD costs 15 and full details can be obtained from the Society's website at www.witchend.com.![]()
Can I add a recommendation? I have the DVD and it's very interesting indeed
