The fish bit hits a nerve for a certain generation, as cold, tinned fish which sent sandwiches soggy was a staple of Sunday afternoon tea in working class households.... uurh!

...but was actually rather good for you.

I initially thought James Mason was miscast, but I understand where he is coming from now and enjoy his performance in every showing.

PS.in times of poverty I go back to tinned herrings on toast as comfort food. You can get some wonderful toppings with them these days. LOL

An underrated film IMHO. I played the Rodney Bewes part in an am dram production years ago. Great fun.

Susan played Mason's daughter-in-law in the excellent Mandingo, only that time it wasn't fish on the menu.

One of my favorite scenes from this film is the love scene between "Florence" and "Arthur" when he takes he to see the home they'll be living in if/when she agrees to marry him. I think it's so beautifully and lovingly shot, especially the images of "Florence" focusing on her face through the bouquet of flowers. I sometimes wonder if the Director of Photography wasn't at least a little bit in love with actress, even before she agreed to go out with him.

There is what I think is a beautiful love story behind the scenes of this film. Norman Warwick who was the Director of Photography asked Hannah Gordon ("Florence") to go out with him a few times while the film was being shot. She kept saying "no", but finally agreed to go out to dinner with him on the final evening of shooting. They were married six months later on the 5th of February 1970, two weeks before the London premier of the film on February 19th. The marriage only ended when Norman died on the 24th of August 1994 at the age of 74 (he was some 20 years older than Hannah), not quite six months shy of their 25th wedding anniversary. Their son, Ben Warwick, who was born in July of 1973 is an actor like his mother.

As per a request from cully in the Diana Coupland thread, some images of La George from "Spring and Port Wine". These were deucedly difficult to get, Susan doesn't stop moving for more than 2 seconds and her hair seemed to be always in her face.

Len Jones aka the voice of Joe 90. He later appeared as Sally Thomsett's brother in Straw Dogs.
