name='Gerald Lovell']I seem to remember that Old Mother Riley was a fixture in a childrens' variety programme in the 70s (was it JUNIOR SHOWTIME?) played by another chap who may have originally been Arthur Lucan's stand-in. Roy something-or-other, I think?

Are you thinking of Lucan's understudy Roy Roland?

Yes, I think that must be it. He played Old Mother Riley in the show I referred to in quite a number of editions, I think.

I have half hour documentary LIFE OF RILEY which dates back to the 1980s and was made at Anglia TV. Very sad to see how Arthur Lucan was treated.

There seems to be another OMR documentary. I think Aphra has it, but does anyone else?

I wish they had released more as I haven't seen them all. I know some are supposed to be rubbish but it's still good to see them to make up your own mind!

Many of you will know the story of the making of Old Mother Riley Meets The Vampire. As told to me by Producer Richard Gordon...it seems that Richard was acting as Belas agent on a tour of UK theatres with the play Dracula..this failed dismally and Bela and his wife were left stranded and penniless in the UK. Richard Gordon set up the movie with Old Mother Riley and Belas' fee was just enough to cover fares back to the US for Bela and his wife. Apparently Beal was unaware that 'Old Mother Riley' was a man in drag...and thought he was 'acting' with a woman ....a misconception that poor Bela may have even taken to the grave. Richard Gordon is a wonderful, friendly man whom I met at a few film festivals and at his office in New York. He has a wealth of stories about Bela, Karloff, and other greats and should certainly write a biography ! His brother Alex worked with Ed Wood Jnr and actually has a co writing credit on Plan 9 and other Wood (wooden ? ) epics.

    Great story, Steve.

There was a book out on Arthur Lucan a few years back and to my lasting regret I passed the opportunity to buy it. Now, it's unobtainable.

I agree. Strange, isn't it. It's much stranger than most drag acts. Even more so when you discover that the daughter in the films is actually his wife!

Renown have an Old Mother Riley DVD collection coming soon. This apparently includes the first film in the series, which I had always read as being lost. Looking forward to these, the copies I have of some of the series are barely watchable.

It is a set of the 6 films previously released plus the Original film. I won't be paying 30 quid for one film. I think Renown did this with the Paul Temple Collection too. Marvellous!
