I have a short (10 minutes or so) OMR documentary that was shown in the early days of the now defunct Badmovies channel.
Does anyone know of/have a docu about OMR?

I have this excellent drama:-
On Your Way Riley (Ch4/YTV 1984) TV Play about the life and death of Old Mother Riley, starring Brian Murphy & Maureen Lipman. Made by Yorkshire TV for Channel 4.
I've heard about that one, thanks crunchie. A friend of mine recalls a docu, such as Arena, but can't remember other details.

I've been reading Betty Driver's autobiography and she says that the three most unpopular women in showbiz were her mother, Beryl Formby and Kitty Lucan![]()
I'm still wondering how Lucan felt in Old Mother Riley MP with Kitty and Torin together like that. And where her hand was on his knee.![]()
LOL Captain! Think I need to read that book!
Hugh, can you find me the link again please? It doesn't work now, I wanted to note the name of the programme...
I'm only really aware of these films from the last one, Mother Riley meets the Vampire, because that one has Bela Lugosi in it. Poor Bela only did the picture after he came to England to appear in a stage revival of Dracula, which was such a financial disaster that he had to take any job to pay his fare back to America.
There was some discussion of the Mother Riley series in the BBC 4 documentary Truly, Madly, Cheaply.

They're an acquired taste, personally I think they're all pretty painful.

I often make very broad allowances for films, trying to remember the context of the times in which they were made, but I have to admit that OMR is really a struggle. It is difficult to comprehend how popular the character was.
The Brian Murphy bio-pic was excellently done though, I must say.
Smudge
Agreed. In his (her?) time Old Mother Riley was massively popular. I can remember us kids cheering when her films came on in the local flea pit. But none of us could do with soppy Kitty. Tastes change but I still like OMR - and Lucan made not the slightest concession to femininity. How did he manage it - and for years.
I seem to remember that Old Mother Riley was a fixture in a childrens' variety programme in the 70s (was it JUNIOR SHOWTIME?) played by another chap who may have originally been Arthur Lucan's stand-in. Roy something-or-other, I think?
Old Mother Riley Joins Up is showing for free at the Imperial War Museum in London this Sunday.
