The Centre of Attention to remake Sixties classic Darling

    20 July, 2009 | By Audrey Ward

The Centre of Attention, the London-based contemporary art organisation, is remaking John Schlesingers classic film, Darling.

The film, which has been renamed Action Diana, will shoot this summer at a range of locations, including a three-day shoot at Mount Stuart, a neo-Gothic Victorian mansion on the Isle of Bute, off western Scotland.

The original film, which starred Julie Christie, tells the story of an amoral model who sleeps her way to the top of the London fashion scene at the height of the Swinging Sixties.

The organisation, led by artists Pierre Coinde and Gary ODwyer, will recreate the film, shot for shot, but will star members of the public rather than actors and actresses.

What does Equity think about this ?

I assume this will not be a mainstream film, and it will only be shown in art galleries etc.....

    What's the point of a shot-to-shot remake?

Good grief. Do we need a remake of DARLING? And second, this remake boggles the mind. Here is another description from the Centre of Attention website. Would anyone care to put this into clear English, please: "Action Diana has a story, but the artists atomisation of it creates a myriad of art quotations, a document of early 21st Century gallery visitors, and a double helix of narrative."

    10.00am - 2.30pm on Saturdays

    The Gardens

    10.00am - 6.00pm daily

Mount Stuart, on the Isle of Bute, is Britains most astounding neo-Gothic Victorian mansion, set in some of the most idyllic coastal landscape you could imagine.

On site, the Centre of Attention will be performing Action Diana, with members of the public playing the parts in this remake of an astounding British film.

Action Diana has a story, but the artists atomisation of it creates a myriad of art quotations, a document of early 21st Century gallery visitors, and a double helix of narrative.

Action Diana combines fine art, film, performance, documentary and story-telling in what the Centre of Attention calls a 'hot installation'. Mount Stuart becomes a set and a production-meeting venue offering visitors the opportunity to see the artists at work and to have a cameo appearance in a film.

For Action Diana, Mount Stuart will play the parts of an Italian Palazzo, a village church, the Capri coast, the Thames at Chiswick and a flower shop. Will you play your part?

A project in collaboration with Sophie Crichton-Stuart and the Mount Stuart Trust.

I can't see the point of this unless it is some form of student project.

Darling is a specific sixties period piece - you can't really set it in any other period unless it was drastically re-written (and therefore not the same film at all).
