How's this for something strange? A few months ago, I joined PayPal so that I could pay for certain items on eBay that could only be paid for using a PayPal account. However, I deleted my account with PayPal a week or so later when it wouldn't let me buy an item off eBay, so it was useless to me. I then received an email from PayPal confirming that my account was terminated.

Then, a few days ago, I found a film memorabilia website that had a Front-of-House set on it that I wanted to buy. I was given the choice of paying on line through my PayPal account (which was not possible) or directly with my Visa MasterCard credit card and, of course, I chose the latter. I then received an email thanking me for my payment through PayPal. I thought it was odd, as I no longer have a PayPal account. So I contacted the seller, explaining the situation and he emailed me back today to tell me that my payment had been received through PayPal and the stills set was posted to me today by Special Delivery. Anyway, I just tried to log on to PayPal using my email address (which is still on there) and my password, but it won't recognise them, as, of course, I deleted my account some weeks ago.

Now the question is, if I no longer have an account with PayPal, how did my payment reach the seller through it? It's all very odd.

Have you checked the bank account/credit card you registered with PayPal?

Yes, I used the same credit card number when I joined PayPal that I paid for the stills with.

I would suggest you contact PayPal asap.

Well, I will do eventually. But I was thinking that if it worked for buying this Front-of-House set, it will probably work for another purchase from this seller. There are another two sets I want to buy off him and if I can pay through PayPal for them, even though I haven't got an account any more, all well and good. I suppose it's possible that my credit card details have somehow been retained somewhere on the PayPal system.

I think I would also contact your credit card company.

I've been thinking...maybe my payment got through because it went through the seller's present PayPal account and not my deleted one.

It will work again but if you do not have enough in your bank account then your bank will charge you an hefty charge for doing so.

Have you checked your bank statement to see the method of payment? Paypal also normally send a notification email if a transaction has taken place.

Well, I don't get my next bank statement until the end of the month and there's more than enough in my bank account to cover this transaction. However, if the seller has told me that the payment got through okay and the stills were posted to me today, that's good enough for me. And yes, that's the funny part. I did get an email from PayPal telling me that my payment to the seller had gone through. Very odd.

I just had a thought. In order to use your PayPal account to buy something, you would have had to have logged on to your own PayPal account. If you didn't, then you appear to have just paid by credit card into the vendor's PayPal account.

I bought something a few months ago via Paypal. I don't have an account at all. I was able to buy using my debit card details in a similar way to how I would usually buy online. As you suggested, I think that purchase may have gone through the seller's account.

Yes, Bats and EllyMack. That does seem to be what happened, doesn't it? So my account was deleted after all...but it seems I'm still able to buy with PayPal as long as my details go through the seller's account.

I think what may have happened is that ebay owns paypal (or paypal owns ebay) so it is possible they duplicate records on ebay's own site if you 'attach' your ebay account to your paypal account. I would log in to ebay and check your paying options, my guess is that paypal is still selected and since credit card attached to paypal is still active payments are still going through.

Ah, but the seller I bought the stills off was not an eBay seller, Wolfgang. And the reason that I deleted my PayPal account in the first place was because, although I chose eBay as an option to buy from, when I finally did bid on an eBay item that said "PayPal Account Required", a sign from PayPal said that I did not have permission to use PayPal on eBay. I have been an eBay buyer for seven and a half years and have bought over 800 items off eBay sellers in that time, always paying by cheque. So I thought it would save me endless trips to the Post Office if I joined PayPal and paid for items that way. But it didn't work for me and so I got rid of it.

In that case I would just ask my credit card company to replace my card. At least then you will know for sure that your account is dead.

Thanks, Dame Starry, it does indeed look as though my payment went through the seller's PayPal account and, as I've just received my Campbell's Kingdom Front-of-House set off him this morning, I have just ordered another late 1950's set off him in the hope that my first transaction wasn't some kind of fluke.
