I have vivid memories of 3 British dramas that were aired on CBC-TV and/or possibly TVO in Canada, during the 1990s, or just possibly the late 80s. I cannot remember the names of any of them - although the plots are quite clear in my memory. (Recently located the name of one of them as I remembered the name of the star, the late great Bob Peck - "Natural Lies".) These dramas might have been mini- series.

Brief description of first one - very tense drama of recently divorced woman with 2 kids who is returning to college/university, lives in nice London house near a park (Primrose Hill, Richmond?) meets charming, intense young man in college class and begins relationship, he moves in. She also has good relationship with ex husband who is in construction business (or maybe he's an architect or developer?). She soon realizes new boyfriend is psycho, controlling, manipulative, and tries to end it with him. He turns into a stalker type, gets her kicked out of school, terrorizes her kids, beats up ex-husband. She turns to hubby for help and he in turn has a friend, an older man who has decidedly criminal connections - the details get vague here but I think this man witnesses some incident with the stalking boyfriend and bluntly says the only way to make him stop is to kill him.......which he arranges. And eveyone lives happily ever after !

The other film involved similar plot point of emotional abuse - young boy lives with divorced mum and her new boyfriend who is a terrible bully. Mum does not see the more extreme incidents and thinks the guy is just trying to toughen her son up - plot point is that ex-husband and boy's father is gay and now lives with his new boyfriend. Kid hardly ever sees his father as Mum has been convinced that the father's home setup is all wrong and he is bad influence. Boy has built a hidey hole in the garage where he goes when he gets home from school and his mum is not yet home from her work. Every day is a tense race home from his school to try to get into the hiding place before the bully bf gets home - sometimes he doesn't make it!! Climax of film was all out fight in the front garden and the street between father and bully.

    Any ideas?

I think the first one you describe may be another Bob Peck movie called One Way Out (1989). It was produced by Channel 4 Films.

The plot given at the IMDB seems to fit your descripton:

    One Way Out (1989) (TV)

The second one sounds like Hollow Reed with Martin Donovan and Ian Hart as the gay couple.

The second one does indeed sound like The Hollow Reed and my husband was in it as an extra!

He and his five-a-side football team played in the indoor match in the film with Ian Hart - who apparently couldn't kick a ball to save his life.

This scene was filmed at the sports hall at Brunel University in Uxbridge.

Well, that's 2 for 2. I've looked at the IMDB link and those are absolutely the right films, Hollow Reed and One Way Out. Now I'll have to try and find them both to watch again.

Thanks to Euryale and Captain Waggett for such swift and correct replies.
