Forgive me if this one's been done before, but what is your favourite historical film? I'm meaning those set prior to the 20th Century as I imagine there would otherwise be a plethora of World War II films (nothing wrong with them but I suppose they could take up a whole thread to themselves).

Three I love are Anne Of A Thousand Days, Zulu and A Man For All Seasons. I suppose if pressed I'd have to go with Zulu.

Probably lots of others I can't recall right now.

I've always liked Mary, Queen of Scots and A Man For All Seasons from those dealing with the Tudor period. And The Mudlark for the Victorian period. There are lots more based on 19th century literature or earlier but those aren't strictly 'historical' by your definition (although try telling TV channel 'Yesterday' that) so I won't go into those.

I'd have to go for 'El Cid' and 'A Lion in Winter'.

I`d have to of course go for Oliver! Ok its a musical but very historically correct, probably more than some other period dramas I have seen.

Another of my favorites is Wuthering heights with Laurence Olivier, very atmospheric!

One film I was very disapointed with was `the other bolelyn girl`, I thought it was rubbbish! I am a fan of Phillipa Gregory but thought this film could have been better, it didn`t do the book justice IMO.

From Hell with Johnny Depp telling the story of Jack the Ripper.

300 Excellently choreographed battle sequences and a gripping storyline.

    Master and Commander Great cast.

    Amistad Harrowingly historically accurate.

The Messenger: The Story of Joan of Arc (1999) Hauntingly supernatural.

    Spartacus

Hero (2004) For the settings and costimes alone.

    Excalibur

    Elizabeth (1998)

    Last of the Mohicans

    The Elephant Man

    The King and I

Not really a film but James Clavell's Shogun (1980) deserves a mention.

Kubrick's "Barry Lyndon" is really in a class all by itself. Beautifully photographed, Kubrick's attention to detail is amazing, and best of all there's no modern day sensibilities that creep into so many "historicals."

    Jude being too cheerful?

No love for Gainsborough on this thread? There are few better ways of spending a Sunday afternoon than curling up on sofa with The Man in Grey. But enough of my private life...my fave 1940s historical has to be The Wicked Lady

I understand Hardy only wrote his novels as entertainments to fund his poetry:

Thank god he did not take them seriously

Which reminds me of a favourite I don't recall in the list ,Polanski's Tess ( I had not read the book, that was a miserable trip home from the pictures!)

No one else has mentioned it, so I will, The Private Life of Henry VIII. May have faded a bit, but the way Laughton plays Henry, that's how I'll always see him - as a gluttonous pig, not a GQ model.

Personally I don't rate TPLOHE .... but the mention of Laughton reminds of the superb Hunchback of Notre Dame.
