I own four of those. Clearly I'll never be a Proper Film Fan.

I have 10 - and surprisingly 6 were from the musicals sections![]()
At best, I'm only interested in a third of those. But that's subjective. Just because the author is published in a newspaper doesn't mean his taste is better than the rest of us.
And I own just two.
I've got seven!![]()
Even allowing for subjectivity, it strikes me as being a pretty dumb list.![]()
Everybody's tastes are different, so such lists are meaningless - they just fill up space in the paper and act as free advertising for the DVDs - would the compiler accept a few freebies to include a title on the list ? Likely........

I very much agree with you, it is purely down to taste. I have 10 of these titles, and perhaps there are another ten or so that may be of interest to watch. I like sci-fi and horror, and whilst I enjoy the Alien films (mentioned in the list), I definitely wouldn't include Final Destination 2 as being a 'must-own' DVD.
To my surprise,I own 14 of those, although I can only lay hands on
13 of them, the last must have been 'lent out' or lost, but I KNOW I
bought it! Mixture from most of the ranges shown, except the kids
one; my 'kids' being grown men, I sort of bypassed that section
although I have seen a few on the list!
Without a detailed search I probably have @30 but most of the rest I would not want on my shelves.

Yes, there's a few there that I've had and got rid, and others I wouldn't want in the first place...it's a pretty poor list considering the "should own" title IMO. I have about 35 of these films on DVD and LD, though I should qualify I have the original cut of APOCALYPSE NOW not the REDUX version which I've not seen and don't feel the need to.
I have around a thousand DVD's of a wide variety of films dating from the 1930's (The Four Feathers) to 2005 (Polanski's version of Oliver Twist) , but I've only got five of the ones on that list.

I've got this lot.
It's an interesting list. Some are, I think, worthy of a 'should have' list, most of the others are just very good films, while one or two of them are grossly over-rated IMHO.
* = films/TV on my list that IMHO one 'should have'
The preamble ends with a bit of a non sequitur.
"Whether you're after unseen footage, entertaining insights from directors and actors....here is our selection of films on DVD you'll want to watch again and again and again"
The premise appears to be to set out a list of DVDs which have merit in their own right but those merits would not necessarily make the film in question become intensely re-watchable.
With this goal in mind, it is not a failing to exclude great feature films from the list. However, the list is still somewhat flawed. For example, the Quatermass and the Pit DVD mentioned would appear to be the Optimum release (as that is the one to which the price tag fits). Any DVD collector with any sense would want to own the Anchor Bay version with the Roy Ward Baker and Nigel Kneale commentary.
I suspect the Western category was omitted because the better and unedited editions are not sold on Amazon.co.uk.
But why categorize according to genre? It would have been better to categorize by the merits that are being promoted. My suggested categories would be:-
AUDIO-VISUAL PRESENTATIONS
RESTORED PRESENTATIONS
AUDIO COMMENTARIES
MAKING OF' SUPPLEMENTED DISCS
EXTENDED EDITIONS
INNOVATIVE PRESENTATIONS
I've got 57 of those and of the remaining 53 there are 7 that I agree I should also own, 4 I've owned and got rid of and 22 I wouldn't ever consider buying.
I have 27 of these and quite frankly don't really want any of the other 83.
I own 28 of these. But odd that they pick some out which are long OOP and so commanding silly prices (Like Whistle and I'll Come To You). Some I'm afraid I've never even heard of ... does that make me any less of a film fan?
It's just advertising the DVDs that they (or their partner retailer) has got in stock and can't shift or just want to sell more of. There's a link at the bottom of the main page (before the feedback) where you can order any of these. There are thousands of films that should be on any list like that but which they aren't trying to promote
It shouldn't be titled "110 DVDs you should own". It should be titled "110 DVDs we own (the rights to) and are trying to sell"
