Following his discharge from the US army in 1944, Poitier joined the American Negro Theater in New York which led to film work and his breakout role in No Way Out (1950). Subsequenty he carved out a unique and astonishing career with many memorable performances in many memorable films: The Defiant Ones (1958), The Bedford Incident (1965), To Sir, With Love (1967), In the Heat of the Night (1967) to name but a few. Made his directorial debut with Buck and the Preacher (1972).
