Although he achieved recognition as a performer and game show panellist, his function as a gag writer for other comic talents made him the backbone of 70s and 80s British comedy. Morecambe and Wise, The Two Ronnies, Bob Hope, Tommy Cooper and Kenny Everett all benefited from his talents.
