American visits his girlfriend's ancestral home in England,to find it full of unfriendly villagers and weird things in the basement. Lacklustre adaptation of Lovecraft, which takes the barest germ of The Color Out of Space to create a generic horror scenario. Karloff is good, of course, but is offset by Adams' Brooklyn tough guy act, which is totally out of place. Somewhat redeemed by the finale, with a radioactive Karloff maurauding around in makeup that looks like a cheap Destro cosplay. The Bavaesque lighting effects are nice, too, the strong suit of director Haller. The Curse (1987) is a closer adaptation of Lovecraft's story. Not a great film, but better than tjhis. |
