Another Thin Man

1939

W. S. Van Dyke
Director
MGM
Studio

In the third of six Thin Man films, Nick and Nora arrive back in New York with a new addition to the family in the form of Nickie, Jr. They are immediately involved in another mystery when their financial manager is murdered after receiving a number of bizarre threats from a wronged business partner. But is the obvious suspect the right suspect?

An adaptation of Hammett's short story "The Farewell Murder," but not scripted by him, and it shows a bit. The mystery is a bit more convoluted than the first two films, and a few red herring subplots (such as the mysterious new nanny) could have been dropped with no loss to the overall film. Nick & Nora's chemistry and banter are as charming as ever, and there are some sublime bits here. Nonetheless, the series did start to slip a bit from here in, though always remaining watchable. Followed by Shadow of the Thin Man in 1941.
