| Laurel & Hardy's 7th feature length picture is a re-working of the Balfe opera with them living as gypsies and taking care of a young princess until she reaches adulthood. Stan & Ollie's scenes are genuinely funny, but the musical distractions throughout make it a disjointed and uncomfortable experience altogether. The highlight is the long, unbroken sketch where Stan is left in the cabin to bottle some wine, steadily getting himself drunk - classic! This was Thelma Todd's last film; she was murdered (and I use that phrase very deliberately) in December 1935 and as a result her scenes were cut and re-edited. Followed by Our Relations (1936). |
