Frankenstein Meets the Wolfman

1943

Roy William Neill
Director
Universal Pictures
Studio

Larry Talbot is resurrected by graverobbers who foolishly decide to conduct their business on the night of a full moon. Larry seeks out the aid of Maleva, the old gypsy woman who helped him before. She knows a doctor who can help him, a doctor by the name of Frankenstein . .

The first third of this film is fantastic, with a moody, noirish graverobbing scene, and probably the best wolfman transformation Universal pulled off. Then it gets steadily sillier until the all too brief monster fight. Still great fun, but not a great film. The fact that much of the script was fiddled with and scenes deleted definitely shows.

Note: Gil Perkins and Eddie Parker are listed here as 'stunt doubles,' but it is fair to say they did most of the acting as the Monster and Wolfman. Parker also played the Monster in certain scenes, as did apparently Bob Pepper. As to exactly which scenes they played in, it's difficult to say--the thread on this topic takes up nearly 500 pages on the monsterkidclassichorror forum alone. The other two hospital orderlies might be stuntmen Pepper and Wes Hopper, but can't be sure without photos of those guys.
