| A dark and dreary but nonetheless interesting take on the loss of innocence in war, starring Rock Hudson as Turner, a U.S. Army demolitions captain in Nazi-occupied Italy. His mission goes wrong and he is the lone survivor of his unit. He is saved by a group of orphaned children from Reanoto, a town whose population was massacred by the SS. In return for helping him blow up a dam, Turner agrees to train the kids in the use of guns so they can get revenge on Taussig, the cruel SS commander who ordered their families killed. Features some good supporting performances by Sylva Koscina as Bianca, a German doctor, and Sergio Fantoni as Captain von Hecht, a determined but principled German officer who hates the SS, and Mark Colleano as Aldo, the forceful and calculating leader of the orphans. A few unpleasant scenes of sexual assault are all that mar an otherwise interesting film. |
