Crews of two spaceships crash land on a desolate planet and discover the long dead remains of a previous landing. What made them crash? And what is bringing the bodies of the dead crewmen back to life? Low budget science fiction film is turned into a mini masterpiece through Bava's masterful use of mist and colour to create an atmosphere of dread and foreboding. The scene where Markary and Sanya investigate the tools of an ancient spacecraft among the remains (and recorded voices) of its fossilized crew are especially evocative. It should be clear to anyone that watches this film that it was a major influence on Alien, but apparently the obvious isn't always readily accepted. MGM's Midnight Movies DVD is a very fine rendition of the film, with proper colors and aspect ratio. Too bad all Italian films of this period haven't been given the same treatment! -Dave W. |
