Mission to discover what lies at other end of wormhole when an ancient gate is discovered in Egyptian ruins. Kurt Russell is the taciturn military leader with issues, Spader the earnest scientist with something to prove; we are along for the ride. Not a bad sci-fi film (excellent by Emmerich's standards) that somehow led to a very profitable TV franchise.
