Wolfen

1981

Another 1981 werewolf offering. This one takes things seriously and has a pleasing conservationist message! The werewolf point-of-view shots are impressive and scary, particularly the derelict church scene.

Finney doesn't really convince as a jaded NYC detective, but Gregory Hines makes up for him. Diane Venora is great as usual and Edward James Olmos...well you'd never know it was the same guy that's in Battlestar Galactica.

James Horner appears to have scored this and Star Trek 2: The Wrath of Khan with the same music. The beasts are disappointingly cute at the finale. Recommended, as is Whitley Streiber's superb source novel.
