Major special effects driven end of the world disaster film in which the Earth's core is heating up, causing earthquakes, major floods and total destruction just about everywhere. The story centres on a science fiction writer living in Los Angeles who is desperate to save his children, his ex-wife, and to some degree her new partner from ending up the way of everything around them (i.e. swallowed up by the cracks in the ground or simply falling into the oceans).

This is simply one of those films you have to see in hi-definition or not at all. The visual effects are awesome, among the very top of the range ever seen in a movie. As usual for a disaster movie it does have it's typical overlong running time (158 mins) and a plot which pads out the duration with boring dialogue and predictability.
