An adaptation of the play The Cat and the Canary, which had been filmed as a silent just three years previously. This was Universal's first sound horror film; alas, it is also a lost film. The Spanish version La Voluntad del muerto, filmed at night on the same sets (and said to be the better film, much like the Spanish Dracula) is also lost. Luckily about two minutes of footage found its way into Universal's comedy short Boo! in 1932, and that is where these screenshots come from. The 1946 film of this title is no relation.
Perhaps someday it wil be found in some forgotten archive of a collector. We can hope...at least the soundtrack survives in the UCLA archives.
