Karate-choppin' lady-lovin' ex-CIA agent and general bad-ass Black Dynamite is out to avenge the death of his drug addict brother, and no one is going to stand in his way. Soon he uncovers a diabolical scheme that's bigger than anything he could imagine. Pretty much perfect parody of every aspect of the blaxploitation genre, replete with overacting, boom mikes, mismatched stock footage, etc. Some well-done homages to You Only Live Twice and Enter the Dragon as well. The only real problem, besides a somewhat overly silly ending, might be that it is too perfect a parody, and some viewers (apparently including clueless New York Times critics) might come away with the impression that it's merely a bad film. Shades of people asking why they made a documentary about such an awful band when referring to This is Spinal Tap. Shame that Tucker Smallwood, Mike Starr and Richard Edson had their parts so cut down--their scenes are great, and do help a lot to explain the plot. It's not as if the movie were over-long or anything. -Dave W. |
