A group of friends take a holiday at a mountain cabin by a lake; both the cabin and lake figure in a legend of a long-ago murder. Naturally, weird things begin to happen. Slow-moving, nearly meditative horror film. The mounting sense of dread, the inevitable sense of a doom coming to be, is similar to the works of M.R. James. Indeed this film would make a pleasing companion to Night of the Demon, made the same year. A forgotten minor masterpiece, at least outside of Norway, where it is considered one of the best Norwegian films of all time, and rightfully so. Interesting to see the antecedents of Norway's recent wave of horror films. Certainly 2009's Død snø (Dead Snow) owes much to the shadows cast by this film. -Dave W. |
