To be fair, I think much of the blame for this atrocity lies not with George Lucas, but with certain producers, who shall go unnamed here but were veterans of producing 70s variety show dreck such as Barry Manilow specials, who came in and seem to have taken over production and caused discord with the creative types. A good caution to retain direct control of your franchise, something which Lucas unfortunately took to an extreme in later years. Don't forget to fight the frizzies.
