Based on a popular Dutch somewhat autobiographical novel by Jan Wolkers, this tale of amour fou homages French New Wave and adds Verhoeven's no holds barred sensibilities. Earthy, occasionally ugly and ultimately sad.

Great performances from the leads, especially Hauer as the likeable/unlikeable Erik. DVD has a commentary track with good and unfiltered insight from Verhoeven, one of the World's great directors.
