First episode of the first series (where John Drake is an American working as a UN troubleshooter), finds Drake investigating the location of five million dollars in gold earmarked for NATO. The banker in charge of it has been murdered, and the gold is hidden somewhere in Italy, but where? Fairly engaging first episode is slightly marred by colourless villains and a few too many British actors attempting to play Italians, though Shelley is charming whatever her accent. The Italian village is actually Portmeiron in Wales, which later played The Village in The Prisoner. The location photography, incidentally, was filmed by a very young John Schlesinger (who was fired for his efforts). -Dave W. |
