A group of rail travelers have their fortunes told by the mysterious Dr. Scheck (aka Dr. Terror). Werewolf: Architect McCallum travels to his ancestral home in Scotland to do some renovations, revealing a dark secret. The worst segment, listless and predictable. Creeping Vine: A family is menaced by a homicidal plant. A very weak riff on Day of the Triffids. Voodoo: Jazz musician Clark finds the gods of voodoo don't appreciate plagiarism. A minor episode, saved by some great jazz and a sense of humor lacking in the other segments. Still, one wonders about the British obsession with voodoo in the Sixties. Disembodied Hand: Snooty art critic Lee harasses abstract artist Gough literally ot death, but finds that artists get the final word. The standout segment of the film, thanks to the verbal fireworks between the leads, and a genuinely nasty and fitting ending. Vampire: Bob's new wife has a secret. Or does she? What seems obvious is confounded by am acidly amusing ending, perhaps a lesson on how to eliminate competition? Sutherland is great in his first big role. Amicus' first omnibus film, inspired by Dead of Night, and which inspired several similar films from the same studio. The ending is a bit obvious, but at the same time still has a resonance after all these years. Thanks to philly for identfying some unknowns! -Dave W. |
