Spaceballs

Mel Brooks
Director
MGM
Studio

Brooks' Star Wars parody was unfortunately timed to appear in theaters at the nadir of interest in that franchise, but has aged well and acquired a strong fanbase, especially now that Star Wars is once again EVERYWHERE. Brooks' last really good film, much better than History of the World and the painful Men in Tights, but relies far too much on schtick. Many of the jokes are laboured, to put in mildly. Very funny, but not nearly as clever as it could or should have been.

Nearly a quarter century later, I still can't decide if Pullman and Zuniga are just really awful, or subtly imitating the callow young cast of A New Hope. Either way, it doesn't do the film any favors.

And remember, Evil will always triumph, because Good is dumb!
